5 Top Tips for Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility

The corporate world has long since changed from the days where profits and results were all the mattered and what went on behind closed doors stayed behind closed doors. Nowadays, businesses have Corporate Social Responsibility to think about; and even if you’re not overly concerned with embracing an ethical and environmentally sustainable business plan, the social pressures to comply are certainly compelling, especially when the profits of your business are at risk.

In this month’s article, we’re taking a look at what Corporate Social Responsibility is, why it is important for your business, and some measures you can take to improve your business’s reputation.

What is Corporate Social Responsibility?

Corporate Social Responsibility – or CSR for short – simply refers to a the obligation for a business to operate in a way that is beneficial, or at least not as harmful, to the environment, local community and society as a whole. It is important to note that CSR does not simply refer to the legal obligations placed on a business, and to really be considered socially responsible, a business must go above and beyond the law, actively trying to lessen and reduce their impact on society and the environment.

How does CSR affect my business?

Concerns for the environment are growing, which means that more and more of the population are boycotting businesses that are known to be harmful or neglectful of the environment. Likewise, if your business has a bad reputation for being uncaring towards the local community, or actively going against community wishes, it is highly likely that the community won’t want to support your business and will take their custom elsewhere.

Being known as a socially responsible company is good for business in that it promotes a friendly and caring company image which appears more trustworthy, thus enticing more business in.

What steps can I take to become more socially responsible?

1. Donate money

Pledge to donate some of your profits to a charity of your choosing. Charity work is always viewed very favourably, and not only will it benefit your business’s reputation, you can help improve someone’s quality of life.

2. Get involved with the community

Whether it’s sponsoring the local football team, offering prizes for local competitions, donating money to a library or helping to raise funds for a new church, participating in local community events can place you in good stead with your neighbours and help to increase your custom from those closest to you.

3. Improve waste management

Cut down the amount of waste you send to landfill. Not only does this reduce the waste that’s piling up around the Earth and causing damage to our wildlife and plants, but it will help to reduce your carbon footprint. Aim to recycle much more of your byproducts and materials, as doing so reduces the amount of new materials that have to be created, and thereby reduces toxic gas emissions.

4. Offer training opportunities

Work experience, internships, part time jobs or voluntary roles can prove invaluable to those who are struggling to get a job, such as young people, the homeless or reformed offenders. Offering these opportunities is a win-win situation; you benefit from improving your CSR and having more staff, and the individual gets an opportunity to turn their life around.

5. Go energy efficient

Making your business more energy efficient by switching light fittings, using timers for appliances, using a renewable energy source, and other simple measures will not only lessen your business’s impact on the environment, it will also impact well on your business’s reputation, and can even save your money!
